Islander readers may have noticed that we have a scuba diving column in the paper. Editing it this week brought back the vivid memory of my only attempt at snorkeling. It was in the Avalon Dive Park.

It was like being inside one of the aquariums I’d often dreamed of owning but never assembled. For all of 30 seconds, it was wonderful.

Then my face mask started to take sea water.

Then my mouthpiece began to take sea water.

I started to panic.

My brain screamed: “Charles, get out of the water NOW.”

I did.

One of these days I’m going to try it again.
