Avalon city officials have taken what Mayor Anni Marshall described as “toe in the water” approach to the decision of California voters to legalize marijuana, as we reported on the front page of the today’s Catalina Islander (“City prepares for the new recreational cannabis terrain,” Friday, Jan. 5, 2018). Around the time we were sending our paper to press, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions took what appears to be the first step toward what some individuals see as a coming Federal crackdown on marijuana. It’s too soon to tell what will actually happen. The Islander will follow this story as it develops. Avalon hasn’t issued any licenses for a marijuana business and presently will only allow medical marijuana dispensaries. However, visitors to Catalina Island should keep in mind that to arrive on Catalina one must either pass through Federal airspace or over Federal waters.
