As you’ve no doubt heard by now, the California Employment Development Department put Avalon’s unemployment rate at 4.9 percent for February. While not perfect, that’s a pretty good number. Other California communities are doing far worse. Long Beach had an unemployment rate of 11.3 percent. The city of Paramount: 15 percent. Seal Beach’s unemployment rate of 4.8 percent of Avalon’s.

California’s statewide unemployment rate was 9.6. The state agency called this an improvement (by 0.2 percent) over the previous month. Yet 9.6 is sill a bad number—the national unemployment rate was 7.7 percent.

There will always be some unemployment—people quit, get fired, retire, move to other states—but I’m hoping the numbers will be even better next month.
